Stok Kangri (6,153 m) is the highest trekking peak in India and one of the most accessible 6,000 m summits in the world. The peak dominates the Stok Range across the Indus Valley from Leh and offers a stunning panorama of the Karakoram, Zanskar, and Great Himalayan ranges from its summit. The trek starts from Stok village (3,350 m) — just 15 km from Leh — and ascends through dramatic high-altitude desert landscapes, glacial moraines, and the Stok La pass (5,000 m). No technical climbing equipment is required, but the summit push involves a steep snow/ice slope requiring crampons and ice axe.

Myths & Legends

The Stok Range is associated with the legend of Gesar of Ling — the great warrior-king of Tibetan epic poetry, whose exploits are celebrated in the world's longest epic poem. Local Ladakhi legend holds that Stok Kangri is the throne of a powerful mountain deity who controls the weather of the Indus Valley. The Stok Monastery (founded 1820) at the base of the mountain is home to an oracle who is consulted on important matters by the Ladakhi community.
