The Ice Shivling — Shiva's Most Sacred Abode
The Amarnath Yatra is one of the most sacred and challenging pilgrimages in Hinduism. The Amarnath cave at 3,888 m houses a naturally formed ice Shivling — believed to be the physical manifestation of Lord Shiva himself. The Shivling waxes and wanes with the moon, reaching its full height on Shravani Purnima (full moon in July/August). The pilgrimage is open for only 45–60 days each year and draws over 5 lakh devotees. Two routes lead to the cave: the shorter Baltal route (14 km) and the traditional Pahalgam route (36–46 km).
Myths & Legends
According to legend, Lord Shiva revealed the secret of creation and immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati in this cave. Two white pigeons are said to be immortal devotees who overheard the secret and have lived in the cave ever since — pilgrims often report seeing them. The ice Shivling is believed to be self-manifested (Swayambhu) and is considered one of the most powerful Shiva shrines in the universe.
